Skincare Habits That Are Ruining Your Skin
All of us dream of clear, radiant skin. The beauty industry is flooded with products promising perfect complexion, but what if instead of helping, some habits are actually harming your skin?
Here are common skincare habits that could be ruining your skin:

1. Rinsing With Hot Water
While a hot shower or splash of hot water on your face feels soothing, it can be detrimental to your skin's health. Hot water strips your skin of essential oils, leading to dryness and irritation. This can cause your skin to age faster, making fine lines and wrinkles more prominent.
TIP: Always rinse your face with lukewarm water. This ensures that your skin retains its natural moisture and stays hydrated and supple.
2. Using Too Many Products in Your Routine
Ten Products Plus? We seem to live in a "10-step-beauty-routine" era where multi-step skincare routines are highly advocated, but layering too many products can overwhelm your skin. Combining numerous active ingredients can lead to irritation, breakouts, and even damage the skin barrier.
TIP: Stick to a simple routine. Cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen are essential. Introduce new products one at a time and give each at least a few weeks to show results before adding another.
3. Popping Your Pimples
It can be super tempting to pop a pimple, but doing so can cause more harm than good. Squeezing pimples leads to inflammation, possible infection, and can leave permanent scars.
TIP: Instead of popping, apply a spot treatment with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and let it work its magic. If you have persistent acne, consider seeing a dermatologist.
4. Not Understanding Your Skin Type
Using products not suited for your skin type can cause problems like excessive oiliness, dryness, or sensitivity. For example, using a heavy moisturiser meant for dry skin can cause breakouts if you have oily skin.
TIP: Take time to understand your skin type. Is it oily, dry, combination, or sensitive? Choose products designed for your specific needs for optimal results.
5. Not Using a Chemical Exfoliant
Physical exfoliants with beads or scrubs can be too harsh on the skin, causing micro-tears and irritation. On the other hand, chemical exfoliants (like AHAs and BHAs) gently remove dead skin cells, promote cell turnover, and improve skin texture.
TIP: Incorporate a chemical exfoliant into your skincare habits routine. Start with a lower concentration and gradually increase usage based on how your skin tolerates it. Usually, 2-3 times a week is sufficient.
